Episode 16: Andrew McDonald The Verbal Wanderer (Part Two)

19Oct

In the second part of a mammoth rant from usual host Andrew McDonald, temporary inquisitors Jess Moran and Luke Paton ask him the big questions. How will the Wanderers fare this season? What is the basis of his love triangle between him, Jerome and Svenja Polenz? That night in November 2005, and how pissed did he get? How St Dino of the Blessed Back Heel allowed Andrew to get in touch with his feminine side?

There's also some of the regular (though expanded) segments, including the hypothetical CEO of the Wanderers scenario, the speedy seven (plus ten), and the Wanderers Mastermind Trivia Challenge.

Episode 15: Andrew McDonald The Verbal Wanderer (Part One)

16Oct

After 14 episodes the One On Wanderers mic gets reversed, and your usual host Andrew McDonald is put under the WSW oriented microscope by his good friends and past guests Luke and Jess. As he is such an old, can't get to the point, wayward, opinionated Anglo he takes an hour to do what past OOW folk have done in a quarter of the time.

In this first part Andrew talks about growing up with the 1974 Socceroos as his first sporting heroes, the glory days of St George Budapest, how football and he drifted apart for a few decades and how the Wanderers brought about a reunion that is certainly stronger and more passionate than ever before. Jess and Luke also take Andrew down memory lane when it comes to playing for North Epping Rangers, the Earle Page College Also Rans, and then brings his personal history up to date with some talk about recent personal issues and how the Wanderers family have helped him get through them.

Episode 14: Going Dutch on Derby Eve with John, The Smiley Bandit

8Oct

The 2016/17 A-League season is here, and kicking off the last minute countdown to what should be a huge derby played at ANZ, Andrew was very fortunate to have a true son of the west, John 'The Smiley Bandit' Van Waard sit down and record another hour of Wanderers' related goodness.

Recorded in the luxurious surrounds of Rooty Hill RSL, a.k.a 'The Vegas of the West', John provides yet another unique and fascinating insight into the cosmopolitan background of yet another WSW fan. Thanks to John's Dutch background we talk about Aussie Guus, the Eredivisie, that Socceroos game at the 2014 World Cup, Hersi and Castelen. John's past engagement with football also includes some talk about ex-Socceroo Jason van Blerk and playing with Blacktown City.

There's plenty of other chat, ranging from how good (or bad) the 2016/17 Wanderers kit is, the family friendly nature of Wanderers' games, Yoshi and Timmy, and of course the impending derby against the smurfs

As usual there's the 'Speedy Seven', 'What I Would Do if Wanderers CEO' and the Wanderers Mastermind Trivia Challenge.

Episode 13: Brogan Renshaw Goes Behind the Pre-Season Game in Cessnock

25Sep

After a lengthy break due to the off-season and your host being a lazy bastard, it's time to bring back some Wanderers love in time for the 2016-17 season. Recorded live in the sports bar of the Kearsley Hotel a few hours before the Wanderers met the Jets at the impressive Cessnock Sports Complex, this episode features the golden tonsils responsible for the fantastic Behind The Game podcast, Brogan Renshaw.

During the course of this episode Brogan and One on Wanderers host Andrew go over some old ground and new, chatting about football in the Blue Mountains, marketing of the upcoming A-League season with the first derby at ANZ featuring prominently as well, and a bit of a look at the whys, wherefores etc etc around 'Behind the Game'. Brogan's meeting with Atti Abonyi gets a going over among other things he has done.

Naturally familiar segments return for the new season of One on Wanderers including the 'Speedy Seven', 'What I Would Do if Wanderers CEO' and the Wanderers Mastermind Trivia Challenge.

Episode 12: Daniel Jackson on the Day That Saw The Biggest Comeback Since Lazarus Was The Marquee for Jerusalem FC

28Apr

It's back to the Bavarian in Parramatta for 'One on Wanderers', and Andrew has St Clair based WSW addict Daniel Jackson visit for a yarn, a bier and some memories of Mateo Poljak. There's a lot of ground to cover, including Daniel's grandfather's love of Newcastle back in the old dart, the away trip to Wrllington for the last round of the 2015/16 A-League season, the problem of Wanderers hats and fat heads, and a review of how well the Wanderers have traveled up to the semi. As always Andrew poses the Speedy Seven questions, asks Daniel what he would do if made CEO for the day, look back at some great games, and tackle the Wanderers Trivia Mastermind Challenge.

Episode 11: The Day After The Sea-Bogan Massacre at Wanderland 1.0 with Jason

4Apr

Family man, ex-mid north coast junior, current Pendle Hill Tigers player/coach and all-round Wanderers addict Jason Sylvester sits down in the noisy back bar of the Bavarian Bier Cafe to chew the fat and his Munich dog with Andrew in this, the eleventh episode of 'One on Wanderers'. Between sipping at his stein and nibbling on some chips and mayo, Andrew asks Jason some big questions, such as why Saba never got the respect that Shinji did, what it was like to be a Newcastle Breakers' fan in the dying days of the NSL, why Pepper Stadium and Campbelltown didn't get the nod for our home ground whilst Wanderland is rebuilt, and what is it like coaching a bunch of 6 year old kids. Jason gets grilled as per usual regarding the Speedy Seven, CEO for a day, the Wanderers issue of the podcast (our move to Homebush) and the Wanderers Mastermind Trivia Challenge.

Episode 10: The Wanderers Media Watch Episode with Jess

26Mar

Having been chased out of Penrith RSL due to the ode and noisy Good Friday punters (for the information of members and their guests), Andrew has asked his tenth guest Jess Moran to spill the beans on her personal history with the Wanderers from the comfort of his own lounge room. That's why the audio quality should sound much better this go round. Jess talks with great authority on the manner in which the Wanderers, football and all forms of media interact, thanks to her involvement in the back room machinations of the club's first season. There's also talk about Nikolai Topor-Stanley, why Ned Zelic was left off the Speedy Seven, the ethics of sponsorship and the Melbourne Victory away game. As heard in previous podcasts there's the CEO for a Day question and Jess also has a red hot dig at the Wanderers Mastermind Trivia Challenge.

Episode 9: Adelaide, Argentina, Ardiles But No Asado with Fabricio

20Mar

One on Wanderers is back after a bit of a hiatus, and we've got our first interstate guest. Fabricio Rodriguez flies up for as many Western Sydney Wanderers games as he can from his Victorian bunker down in Melbourne, and his insights on what it's like to be a long distance supporter are well worth a listen. He also talks to Andrew about what it has been like to experience Australian football from the perspective of an Argentine immigrant who has lived in Australia for over 30 years, South American football and its playing culture, and the code war that exists between AFL and football. As usual Fab tackles the podcast 'Speedy Seven', 'What I Would Do If CEO' and the Wanderers Trivia Challenge.

Episode 8: The Day After The Derby Draw with Cynthia

22Feb

One on Wanderers heads west of its traditional Parramatta-based home of steins and pork knuckles in this podcast, heading out to Penrith to chat with Cynthia Rodriguez. Subbing as a last minute replacement for her Melbourne based brother in law, Cynthia helps Andrew learn more about her Maltese heritage and Melita Eagles, streaming Wanderers games at 5.00 am whilst holidaying in Buenos Aires, what it's like to bring a family including two under-18 children to Wanderers games, and her own unique take on the Sydney derby. It's another big episode where once again a member of the Western Sydney Wanderers community of supporters demonstrates the breadth and unique individuality of the club's membership, debunking the 'soccer hooligan' stereotypes propagated in the main stream media. There's also the 'Speedy Seven', 'What I Would Do If CEO' and another Wanderers Trivia Challenge.

Episode 7: In Some Distress With Mick (But No Incendiary Signals)

15Feb

An absolute bumper episode of One On Wanderers thanks to the efforts of Mick Scarcella, a long time football addict in Western Sydney, who brings a lot to the table on a myriad of issues. Aside from regaling listeners with stories of the Waugh brothers playing soccer with Robbie Slater, or what he thinks about the recent re-signing of Wanderers legends Brendan Santalab and Shannon Cole, there is plenty of personal insight on some big issues coming from Mick. His thoughts on indigenous Australians, football and the Wanderers are fascinating, and his compelling story about battling mental illness with the help of the red and black is a must listen. Of course Andrew asks the 'Speedy Seven' and throws Mick in at the deep end of the Wanderers Trivia Challenge. Oh, and there's some talk about pyrotechnics too.

Episode 6: Melbourne Victory Away With Michelle

6Feb

In the sixth episode of 'One on Wanderers' host Andrew McDonald continues the discussion with female Wanderers fans, asking Michelle McAuliffe to share her stories, her insights. Michelle makes some great observations about the cultural perceptions and stereotypes associated with the Western Sydney Wanderers, and in the process not only brings her own female perspective to the discussion but also accentuates the positive multicultural and social values she sees through being a Wanderers member. There's some chat about her history as a Liverpool FC supporter, Ned Zelic as the 'existential football poet', and what it's like to be an active supporter at the Sydney Derby. As usual the 'Speedy Seven' and 'Wanderers Trivia Challenge' feature in this episode, with Michelle responding with great humor and intelligence.

Episode 5: The Wanderer Woman’s Perspective With Wendy

1Feb

Finally in our fifth episode the voice of those women who have fallen under the spell of the Western Sydney Wanderers gets appropriate attention, and teacher Wendy Brown gives more insight into how atypical a WSW can be. Wendy reminds us that not of the Wanderers fans came into the fold without some past allegiances, whether they be local or overseas. Keep an ear out for her anecdote involving a current player's family, and of course she tackles the usual segments such as the 'CEO for a day', 'The Speedy Seven' and the Wanderers Trivia Challenge. Wendy also shares her thoughts on Andrew Redmayne and both she and Andrew talk about the amazing game against Melbourne City from last Friday night.
